Having a clear vision for your business is essential, but vision alone is not enough. Using the EOS framework of Rocks and Milestones, with SMART goal setting elements you’ll measure and mark progress. Let’s explore what SMART goals are and how they relate to EOS.
The EOS framework is all about achieving clarity, alignment, and traction within your organization. As we’ve covered in a previous post, the Vision component and its clear picture of where you want your business to be in the future. Rocks are specific, high-priority goals that your organization (and subsequently, your department, etc.) aims to achieve within a 90-day period. They are the most critical objectives that will help you move closer to your long-term vision.
This means they’re crafted with Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound elements.
Specific. Clear and well-defined, outlining exactly what needs to be complete in 90-days.
Measurable. Each having a quantifiable outcome to assess success objectively.
Achievable. Ambitious but realistic and attainable with effort by the 90-day deadline.
Relevant. Aligned with your vision and overall business strategy, contributing to the bigger picture.
Time-bound. With a clear deadline - 90 days - providing a sense of urgency.
Rocks prioritize and focus your team's efforts on the most critical objectives each quarter, all in alignment, working toward common goals. Milestones are specific, short-term objectives or tasks that are aligned with your Rocks. They break down the Rocks into actionable steps and help track progress toward their completion.
Both Rocks and their Milestones provide the specificity, measurability, and clarity needed to track progress and ultimately achieve your organization's long-term vision. Rocks create a powerful cadence for strategic execution and goal attainment in your business, all while staying aligned with your vision and purpose.
